A skin graft can be used in plastic surgery in order to cover damaged or missing skin. This procedures involves the removing of a portion of healthy skin from a patients "donor" area, this skin is then placed elsewhere on the body in order to improve the appearance or function of the new area. Depending on the patients particular needs there are currently 3 different types of skin grafts available. These include Full Thickness skin graft, used to treat large deep wounds, areas where high elasticity is needed and/or when all layers of the skin are required not just the surface layers. Spli-thickness graft uses the layers of skin closest to the surface and is most commonly used in the treatment of burn wounds. Composite skin graft which requires harvesting fat, skin and in some cases the underlying cartilage from the donor site which is used when graft of high underlying support is needed.
